What to do
Always compare on the annual figure
The Portugal minimum wage in 2026, from the month to the year
How much the Portugal minimum wage comes to per year
The 2026 monthly minimum in Portugal is €920.00, paid 14 times a year, which comes to €12,880.00 over the year. The amount and the number of payments come from Decreto-Lei n.º 139/2025, de 29 de dezembro; the multiplication is ours. There are 14 payments because on top of the twelve months come the holiday and the Christmas subsidy. Comparing the Portuguese minimum with a twelve-payment one therefore understates the year by two salaries.
What is left of the minimum after deductions
On €920.00 gross, IRS withholding is zero and the social security deduction is 11%, leaving roughly €818.80 net a month. That is our estimate using the mainland withholding table for an unmarried worker with no dependants. The autonomous regions set a higher minimum: €966.00 in the Azores and €980.00 in Madeira. Working there entitles you to the regional figure, not the mainland one.
The Portugal minimum next to its neighbour
In 2026 the other minimum wage tracked here is €1,221.00 a month over 14 payments, or €17,094.00 a year. The annual gap between the two is €4,214.00 — our calculation on each country's published figures. Comparing minimum wages across borders only makes sense on the annual figure and with the cost of living in mind: tax, contributions, rent and transport differ sharply. The gross number on its own says little about purchasing power.
Where to check the Portugal minimum wage and when it changes
The €920.00 figure comes from Decreto-Lei n.º 139/2025, de 29 de dezembro, and that act is what counts — not a press release and not this page. The revision is annual and usually published late in the previous year, which is why December and January see several figures in circulation at once: the announced one, the one under discussion and the one actually published.
Glossary
Statutory minimum wage
The pay floor set by law, which no contract may undercut. Each country sets it by the hour, by the day or by the month, and the number of annual payments differs from country to country.
Gross salary
The figure agreed in the contract, before any deduction. It is the number on the employment record and the starting point of every payroll calculation.
Net salary
What is left after the compulsory deductions. It stays an estimate until the deductions written into your own contract are added, such as health cover, commuting allowances, alimony and advances.
TSU
The single social contribution that funds Portuguese social security, split between worker and employer. The worker share is withheld at a flat rate, with no bands and no ceiling.
Segurança Social (Portugal) — taxa contributiva do regime geral
IRS (Portugal)
Portuguese personal income tax. On the monthly payslip it appears as withholding at source, worked out from a table of rates and abatements, with the final reckoning made in the annual return.
Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (Portugal) — retenção na fonte de IRS
Holiday and Christmas subsidies
In Portugal, two extra annual payments on top of the twelve monthly salaries, which is why people speak of fourteen months. The yearly figure for a Portuguese salary is therefore not simply twelve times the monthly one.
